My family got together recently, and snacks were on the menu. My daughter grabbed a container of soft pretzel balls at the grocery when we were doing our quick snack run. Somehow, I ended up with half a container of the soft pretzel balls in my pantry. Honestly, I'm not a big "eat a soft pretzel" kind of person. Not wanting to waste food, I decided to turn the pretzels into pretzel croutons. Now this is a pretzel I can get excited about!
To make this homemade pretzel croutons recipe you only need three simple ingredients: soft pretzels, olive oil and black pepper. You don't need salt. If you're eating a good pretzel, it should already have salt on it. The black pepper balances out that salt, so don't skip it. (Plus, check out the health benefits of black pepper.) You can use store-bought soft pretzels or make your own homemade pretzels for this bread recipe.
These crunchy German-inspired pretzel croutons are perfect on salads, especially during Oktoberfest. You can also dip the little crunchy nuggets in mustard for a savory snack or appetizer. Try this homemade whole-grain mustard recipe or homemade honey mustard pretzel dip recipe.
Cuisine: American / German
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 to 8 minutes
Total Time: 10 to 13 minutes
Servings: 2
Ingredients
- soft pretzels, cut into bite-sized pieces
- olive oil
- black pepper
Here's how to make it:
- Cut the pretzels into bite-sized pieces. (I cut my pretzels balls into fourths.) Put them onto a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil. Toss to coat. Sprinkle with black pepper, to taste. (You can line the baking sheet with parchment paper for easier cleanup.)
- Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven until pretzels are dry and crunchy, about 5 to 8 minutes. (Ovens vary. Watch them closely because they can burn very quickly.) Remove from the oven and cool. Store the pretzel croutons in an airtight container on the counter.
