In honor of my dad's 90th birthday, I made him a cake. Not just any cake, though – I made this super moist banana bread cake recipe with luscious cream cheese frosting. The nonagenarian birthday boy loved his cake but, in my opinion, it was the frosting that stole the show. I mean, who needs cake when this buttery cream cheese frosting is dessert all by itself!
This rich and creamy icing recipe is so thick, it's seriously like a decadent dessert on its own. I couldn't stop "taste-testing" it. And, of course I had to lick the bowl and spoon (even though my husband fought me for it)! You'll make this frosting for the taste, but you'll also appreciate how easy it is to make. All you need are five ingredients and five minutes. For real!
Here are the five simple ingredients you need to make this decadent gluten-free frosting recipe: cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar (aka confectioners sugar), vanilla extract and salt. That's it! All you do is cream together the butter and cream cheese, then add the powdered sugar, vanilla and dash of salt. Beat until all ingredients are combined and smooth. So quick and easy!
Spread this buttery cream cheese icing recipe over your favorite cakes, cupcakes, scones, cookies, cinnamon rolls, etc. Or just scoop it out and eat it for dessert with a spoon. No judgement here!
Cuisine: American

Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 16
Ingredients
- 8 ounces (1 brick) cream cheese, softened to room temperature
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 3 1/3 cups powdered sugar (confectioners sugar)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- dash of salt
Here's how to make it:
- In a large mixing bowl, add the cream cheese and butter. Using a handheld mixer or a stand mixer with a whisk or paddle attachment, beat the butter and cream cheese on high until blended and creamy (about 45 seconds).
- Add the confectioners sugar, vanilla extract and salt. Beat on low until everything is combined, then on high until everything is smooth (about 2 minutes).
- Use immediately. If desired, you can refrigerate your frosted cake, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, etc., to allow the frosting to set, but it's not necessary (about 20 minutes is enough).
- Store any leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
