I never really thought about making my own marinara. I thought making homemade marinara sauce would take days and require a lot of stirring at the stove. Oh, was I wrong. This delicious and super simple Italian red sauce recipe is so easy and tastes amazing. I used the sauce for my sheet pan mushroom parmigiana recipe, but it's great on any pasta or recipe calling for marinara sauce.
I also love that I can make the sauce with canned tomatoes any time of the year, and it is always delicious. No added preservatives or sweeteners in this marinara sauce (although feel free to add a teaspoon of your favorite sweetener if you like). This tomato sauce delivers simple, pure tomato flavor that will make you always want to have some on hand.
To make this fresh marinara sauce recipe, you will need just five simple ingredients. Here is your gluten-free shopping list: a can of whole tomatoes (read about the health benefits of tomatoes), extra-virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, kosher salt and either a fresh basil sprig or dried oregano (or both!). The marinara cooks up in about 15 to 20 minutes on the stovetop.
I like to slice the garlic for this marinara recipe, not mince it. But if you prefer minced garlic, go for it! For some spice, you can add some crushed red pepper flakes or a whole hot chili that you'll remove at the end of cooking. Or skip both for a mild sauce.
Serve this fresh tomato sauce over your favorite pasta, with some Italian meatballs or in your favorite Italian recipes. The sauce freezes well, so double or triple the recipe and stock up!
Cuisine: Italian
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 to 20 minutes
Total Time: 25 to 30 minutes
Servings: 6 (makes 3 1/2 cups)
Ingredients
- 28 ounces (1 can) whole tomatoes
- 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 7 - 8 garlic cloves, peeled and sliced
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 large fresh basil sprig or 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano (or both)
Here's how to make it:
- Heat the oil in a large skillet.
- While the oil heats up, add the tomatoes to a medium bowl and squish them with clean hands. Add 3/4 cup of water to the tomato can and swish around to grab the tomato sauce left in the can. Set both aside.
- Once the oil is hot, add the garlic slices and stir for 1 to 2 minutes. Don’t let the garlic brown.
- Add the tomatoes and water to the garlic. For some spice, you can add a whole chile pepper or some crushed red pepper flakes. If you like a sweeter sauce, add some granulated sugar or your favorite sweetener. Season with salt, to taste, and mix with a wooden spoon.
- Add the basil leaf on top of the sauce. Let the mixture simmer on medium until the sauce gets thicker and the basil wilts, about 15 minutes. Taste to see if more seasonings are needed. Remove the chile pepper, if used.
- Serve over your favorite pasta, meatballs or use in your favorite Italian recipes.
