Fire and ice. No, I'm not talking about the fantasy novel by George R. R. Martin (but I do miss Game of Thrones!). This fire and ice is a combination of sweet and spicy that makes this easy skillet green beans recipe pop with flavor. If you think green beans are boring, you need to add this vegetable side dish to your recipe rotation.
All you need to make these quick green beans is fresh green beans, brown sugar, hot sauce and butter. The brown sugar adds the sweet, the hot sauce the fire and the butter finishes the green beans with a silky, slightly creamy finish. Contrasting elements that just work together!
Besides being a top vegetable pick for many families, green beans also have health benefits. According to the American Heart Association, "The vegetable helps fight inflammation and is a good source of folate and potassium, which helps regulate blood pressure. Green beans also are a good source of protein and fiber, which helps lower cholesterol."
These green beans make a wonderful side dish for pork, chicken, beef, lamb and even seafood. A side of these beans with meatloaf or fried chicken is pure comfort food bliss. I served mine with juicy grilled pork chops.
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 5 to 10 minutes
Total Time: 10 to 15 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 1/2 pound green beans, trimmed if needed
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1 tablespoon butter
Recipe Notes
- Adjust the amount of hot sauce and brown sugar to suit your tastes.
- I used Tabasco sauce, but any hot sauce you like will work. Every hot sauce has a different heat level, so try different brands until you find the one for you.
- If you have young green beans or haricot verts (French green beans), you do not need to trim the ends.
- This recipe can easily be doubled.
- Store any leftover green beans in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat in the microwave.
Here's how to make it:
- Put the green beans and a little water (about 1/4 cup) into a skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until they reach your desired doneness.
- Add the brown sugar and hot sauce. Cook, stirring, until green beans are well coated and sugar has melted.
- Add the butter and season with salt and black pepper. Cook until butter melts. Serve hot.
