My son was hosting family game night, and I never walk in anywhere empty handed. I knew spinach dip was covered, so I decided to do something new that wasn't a creamy dip. This easy, flavorful Mediterranean bread dipping oil was a welcome surprise on the appetizer table!
This Mediterranean-inspired olive oil bread dip recipe is not your typical olive oil bread dip. Ingredients with strong flavors – kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes, fresh rosemary, crushed red pepper flakes, sumac, lemon zest – are stirred into the olive oil. The result is a flavor explosion with each dip.
If you've never cooked with sumac, it is a ground spice used in Middle Eastern cooking. The spice is crimson in color and has smoky, citrusy and floral notes. It's used in many dishes in the Middle East and on the table as a condiment in Iran.
Here is your shopping list for this amazing dipping oil: healthy olive oil, balsamic vinegar, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, sundried tomatoes, kalamata olives (check out the health benefits of kalamata olives), fresh rosemary, fresh thyme leaves, fresh garlic, crushed red pepper flakes, sumac and a lemon for zesting.
Have plenty of bread to serve with this Mediterranean olive oil dip. I served mine with baguette slices, but Italian bread, French bread, artisan bread or even croutons (make homemade croutons!) or crackers would work. Any leftover oil makes a delicious salad dressing or toss it with hot pasta.
