I was today old when I made my first tuna melt. And yes, it was my first tuna melt ever. Tuna salad was a staple at my grandma's house and my mom's house growing up. Watching my grandma whip up a bowl of tuna salad in record time is a cherished childhood memory. But we never explored outside the tuna box and just stuck with cold tuna salad. Today, in five minutes, a new way to eat tuna has been discovered. I enjoyed every bite of this warm, creamy, cheesy tuna melt sandwich.
This isn't a fancy tuna melt recipe. On the contrary, this is a simple sandwich recipe that only has four ingredients. All you need to create this satisfying, filling sandwich is bread, tuna, mayonnaise and cheese. The tuna is mixed with some of the mayo (I seasoned with black pepper) before being piled onto bread smeared with mayo on one side. Top with a slice of cheese (I used muenster) and cook in a hot skillet until golden, crispy and melty. Who knew?
This hot sandwich made the perfect quick lunch, but would be equally as delicious for dinner with a salad on the side. While I devoured the sandwich, I felt good because of the health benefits of tuna. Instead of potato chips, I served mine with a side of cherry tomatoes just pulled from the vines in the backyard.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 3 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 1
Ingredients
- 2.6 ounces (1 poach) tuna
- 1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise (divided)
- 2 slices sandwich bread
- 1 slice cheese
Recipe Notes
- I used a slice of muenster cheese, but cheddar, gouda, gruyere, Monterey Jack or your favorite cheese would be just as tasty.
- Add other ingredients to the sandwich before cooking like sliced red onion, tomatoes, olives, peppers or whatever you like.
- To make the sandwich healthier, use multi-grain bread.
- Try this recipe with a flour tortilla instead of bread.
Here's how to make it:
- Mix the tuna and 1 tablespoon of the mayonnaise in a small bowl. Season with black pepper, if desired.
- Spread the remaining mayonnaise on one side of both slices of bread. Place one slice, mayo-side down, in a hot skillet. Top with the tuna and slice of cheese.
- Top with the other slice of bread, mayo-side up.
- Cook until tuna is hot and both sides of the bread are golden.
- Cut in half and serve warm.
