If you go to certain parts of the south, it's almost a guarantee that you'll come across boiled peanuts. According to Southern Living, "The practice of boiling peanuts likely originated in Africa, where the Portuguese brought the peanut plant around 1500. The word nguba, which means 'peanut' in the African Kongo and Kimbundu languages, led to the South's nickname for peanuts, 'goober.' When European traders enslaved Africans and took them far from their birthplaces, Africans recreated the dishes they knew as best they could, including boiled peanuts."
Boiled peanuts, or goober peas, are freshy harvested (green) nuts boiled with the shells on in salted water for hours. The shells get soft as they cook. Some say the taste is similar to lima beans or pinto beans.
Instead of standing over a pot of boiling water for hours, we're sharing a slow-cooker boiled peanut recipe. Simply put the ingredients in a slow cooker, turn it to high and walk away. About 18 hours later you will have perfectly boiled southern peanuts. To make this slow-cooker recipe you will need shell-on peanuts, water and salt.
To eat a boiled peanut, crack the peanut at the seam, enjoy the brine from the shell then crack it all the way open and eat the meat. Serve them as an appetizer during get-togethers, when tailgating or whenever you want a salty southern snack.
