I wasn't familiar with Cheddar Bay Biscuits made famous by Red Lobster until recently, when I made Grandma's chicken cobbler casserole. That chicken cobbler casserole recipe called for a box of Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix, but this bread recipe is all from scratch and so easy to make. The result is a warm, cheesy bread that you might want to make all the time now that you know it's so simple and delicious.
To make this garlicky, cheesy biscuit bread recipe, you will need just a few basic ingredients. Here is what you need to gather so you can make this savory, cheesy bread tonight: all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cheddar cheese, an egg, milk, butter, garlic powder, onion powder and either parsley flakes or dried Italian seasoning.
This high-protein bread smells heavenly as it bakes! Serve the bread hot with your favorite soup or salad or protein, or eat it as a snack. It's so gooey and good!
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 35 to 40 minutes
Total Time: 45 to 50 minutes
Servings: 10
Ingredients
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 stick (1/2 cup) melted butter (divided)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon parsley flakes or Italian seasoning
Here's how to make it:
- In a large mixing bowl, sift the salt, sugar, baking powder and flour. I don't have a flour sifter, so I just use a fine mesh strainer. Put ingredients into it then gently tap the sides to push it through.
- Add the cheese and mix with a fork to combine well. You could change up the cheese. Instead of cheddar, try provolone, mozzarella, Gruyere or your favorite blend.
- In a medium bowl, combine egg and milk. Melt 1/4 cup of the butter (half of the stick). Add the melted butter to the egg mix.
- Pour the mixture into the cheese/flour blend and gently combine.
- Put the dough into a loaf pan that's been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean. You could also line the pan with parchment paper.
- Melt the remaining 1/4 cup of butter and add the onion powder, garlic powder and Italian seasoning or parsley flakes.
- Brush the butter mixture over the warm bread. Store the bread in an airtight container to keep it fresher longer.
