Granny’s Granola Recipe: An Old-fashioned Granola Recipe Made With Love by Terri Kendrick

Granny’s Granola Recipe: An Old-fashioned Granola Recipe Made With Love

My mother made the best granola, bar none! When she made a big batch, she’d share gallon-sized bags of it with me and my sister, which we would selfishly squirrel away from our families to sprinkle on our yogurt, snack on by the handful and just generally savor. To us, they were more than just oats; they were equal parts love!

Years ago, Mom shared her granola recipe with us, and my sister mastered it, making it regularly for her family. I, on the other hand, preferred to wait for Mom’s because I knew my granola would never measure up (and OK, maybe I’m a little lazy!). However, after moving to a different state two years ago, I knew I had to give Granny’s Granola a whirl or I’d be eating store-bought from now on.

After my first foray into granola land, I mailed Mom a bag of my finished product to get her critique. She swore it was as good as hers but, in true Mom form, scolded me for spending so much money to mail it to her (granola is heavy)!

Now that my mom is gone, making – and enjoying – her granola is one of the many connections I still have to her and it keeps her memory alive. And, I think she’d be thrilled to know that others will now be enjoying Granny’s Granola too!

Serve Granny’s Granola on yogurt for breakfast or ice cream for dessert, or enjoy it all by itself as a midday snack!

Recipe Notes

  • When you don’t stir the maple syrup up good, you’ll get clumps, which sometimes can be the best part!
  • Honey can be substituted for maple syrup, but you’ll have to experiment with quantity as I’ve never tried honey.
  • Feel free to add cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice or other spices you enjoy.

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Mix the first five ingredients in a large bowl and combine well.
  2. Evenly spread the oat mixture on a greased cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 350-degree F oven for 8 minutes and taste. If the oats are too dry, stir in a little more maple syrup. Even if you don’t add more syrup, give the oats a good stir. Bake for another 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  3. Remove from oven. Let cool slightly and then add the raisins and dried cranberries. Mix well. Store in a plastic food storage bag or airtight container.
