Are you ready for this one? Bourbon balls are an authentic Kentucky candy and a southern delicacy, too. I remember being in Louisville for a conference several years ago and seeing them in gift shops. I had never heard of them before that, though I was well aware of bourbon chocolate derby pie, which I have eaten plenty of!
Bourbon balls are a sweet chocolate treat that's soaked in bourbon with chopped nuts. These chocolatey cookies and cream bourbon balls are like boozy truffles. Holy boozy bourbon balls, Batman! They are rich, delicious and crowd pleasing. Your guests will think you're a superhero for serving them!
One bourbon ball is the perfect serving size (though if you’d like to eat more than one, we won’t say a word!). Bonus: You don’t need to bake cookies for this candy recipe. Oreo Thins are the perfect base for these bourbon balls. They provide the perfect amount of chocolate and sweetness, and you save time!
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 30 minutes plus 45 minutes to chill
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes
Servings: 20
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 10 ounces (1 package) Oreo Thins
- 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons corn syrup
- 3 tablespoons bourbon
For Rolling
- 1/8 cup granulated sugar
- 1/8 cup cocoa powder
Recipe Notes
- Choose a bourbon that's smooth and drinkable but don't waste the really good stuff.
- Store leftover bourbon balls in an airtight container lined with parchment paper.
Here’s how to make it:
- Place the Oreo Thins in a resealable plastic bag and crush with your hands or a rolling pin. Set aside. Process the nuts, powdered sugar and cocoa in a food processor until coarsely ground. Add butter and corn syrup. Process until combined. Add crushed Oreo Thins. Pulse until well incorporated.
- Add bourbon 1 tablespoon at a time and pulse to fold in with the cookie crumb mixture. Process until the mixture is even in consistency and begins to come away from the sides of the bowl. (Three tablespoons should be sufficient to make sure the mixture will hold together.) Cover the mixture and allow to chill for 30 to 60 minutes. This will ensure that the bourbon absorbs evenly.
- To shape into balls, scoop out level tablespoons of crumb mixture and roll between the palms of your hands.
- Place granulated sugar and cocoa powder in a small bowl. Roll one ball at a time around in the cocoa sugar. Re-dip after the sugar starts to disappear (dip up to three times total). Let bourbon balls sit, uncovered, for an hour or more to ensure that some of the sugar is absorbed by the balls. Re-roll once more, if needed.
