Chicago-Style Pork Chop Sandwich Recipe Is a Unique Eat

Chicago has some interesting and iconic foods, like the jibaritoItalian beef sandwiches and deep dish pizzas. One unique eat from Chicago that is less known is the pork sandwich. What makes some of these pork sandwiches unique is that they use bone-in pork chops. Yep, for real.

While we love a good, crispy bone-in pork chop, for this recipe we went the boneless route. The sandwich recipe may sound simple, but the combination of crispy pork, mayonnaise, mustard and sweet caramelized onions is addictive. Throw on some pickled peppers, and you've stepped into sandwich heaven.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 onion, sliced thin
  • 4 boneless pork chops
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • mayonnaise
  • mustard
  • pickled peppers (optional)
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted

Here's how to make it:

  1. Melt the butter in a skillet. Add the onion. Season with salt and pepper. Cook until soft and beginning to brown, about 8 minutes. Remove to a plate and set aside.
  2. Season the pork chops with salt and pepper. Coat the pork chops in the flour.
  3. Heat the oil in the same skillet over medium heat. Add the pork chops and cook until crispy, golden brown on both sides and cooked through, about 4 to 5 minutes per side. Remove to a plate.
  4. Spread desired amount of mayonnaise and mustard on the bottom of the buns. Top with a pork chop, some onions, pickled peppers (if using) and the top bun. Serve immediately.
