Sometimes (a lot of times!) you just want a quick, easy, delicious dinner that's on the table fast. This quick Italian sausage pasta recipe with tomato cream sauce checks all those boxes. This high-protein pasta dinner has only seven simple ingredients and cooks up in about 15 minutes. No muss, no fuss.
The shopping list for this Italian recipe is short and budget-friendly. To make this budget recipe you will need the following ingredients from your fridge and pantry: bowtie pasta (or your favorite short pasta), Italian sausage, a can of diced tomatoes, dried oregano, garlic powder, milk of choice (evaporated, heavy cream, whole milk) and Parmesan cheese. If you're an onion lover like me, you can also grab an onion (check out the health benefits of onions).
Spoon this creamy pasta and Italian sausage into bowls for a simple dinner on busy nights. You could add a side dish to this high-protein recipe like a fresh vegetable, garlic bread or salad for a complete dinner. We went with no sides and watched the baseball game with a bowl of this delicious pasta in our laps. Now that's a good night.
Cuisine: Italian / American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 5
Ingredients
- 8 ounces bowtie pasta (or your favorite short pasta)
- 1 pound Italian sausage, bulk or links (if links, cut into bite-sized pieces)
- 1 small onion, chopped (optional)
- 14 ounces (1 can) diced tomatoes (do not drain)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 cup evaporated milk, whole milk or heavy cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Here's how to make it:
- Cook the pasta in salted boiling water according to package directions for al dente. Drain and set aside. (If you don't have bowties, try penne, rotini or fusilli.)
- While the pasta cooks, put the sausage into a dutch oven or large pot. Add the onion, if using. (You can use pork or chicken Italian sausage.)
- Cook, stirring often, until sausage is browned and cooked through. (If your sausage has a lot of fat, drain some off.)
- Add the tomatoes with liquid, oregano, garlic powder and milk to the pot.
- Stir to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens up.
- Add the pasta.
- Stir in the Parmesan cheese.
- Cook for about 2 minutes to heat through.
- Serve the pasta with more grated Parmesan and garnish with fresh oregano, if desired. Store any leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the microwave.
