North Coast 500: Explore the West Coast of Scotland by Camper Van (The Only Way to Do It!) International Road Trips

White sand beaches, turquoise water, palm trees swaying in the wind ... an idyllic holiday scenario. One you’d never guess you’d find on the West Coast of Scotland. Traveling the North Coast 500 is something I’ve wanted to do for many years. My family and I finally managed it recently, renting a camper van named Morag Moo to explore the hills, lochs and beaches from Inverness to Durness and out to Achmelvich (Lochinver).

The place we most enjoyed was Smoo Cave (Durness). Nothing gives you perspective like exploring caverns by boat, seeing how time and the elements have shaped the world. Plus, we got to wear hard hats (always fun!).

The camper van was the way to go. It let us set our own route, stopping when needed. It also allowed us to bring along our most important items (with two gluten- and dairy-free autistic children, having control over our environment is critical to everyone being their best!). Most importantly, it made a driving holiday extra special for my boys; they were excited to just sit in the van, sleep in the roof pop-up tent and spin the seats to use with the pull-out table. Everything about it added to the magic and wonder of our three-day trek. We can’t wait for our next adventure with Morag Moo.

What a great way to see this part of Scotland. You have inspired me to do something like this when I visit. Thanks for the great story. Thank you for posting in the travel section too. Would love to hear more about traveling with your kids, especially with food allergies. I just traveled with my granddaughter in Germany and she is gluten free. We weren't prepared for the problem finding snacks etc. @carriewatts
