The transition from high school to college is significant. College students must get to class on time, do their own laundry, manage their time and money wisely, and make important academic and social decisions. Teaching and advising college students for over 15 years has taught me that the students who adapt most easily are those who have been given opportunities to be independent and make their own decisions.
I recently encountered a first-year student who was faced with determining his bedtime for the first time in his life; his parents had always told him when to go to bed! As you might imagine, this student struggled to make the transition from child to young adult.
If you want to prepare your child for college, give her the tools she needs, even if that means relinquishing some control and letting go a little. One day she’ll thank you for it.
