Health Care in College: 3 Things College Students Should Know Before Hitting the Books Kids' Health

With school back in session, there are a few things college students should tackle before they get too involved in school and extracurricular activities of all kinds. Here are a few:

  • Check your insurance coverage: If you’re going to school out of state and you’re still on your parents’ health insurance, make sure it crosses state lines with you. If it doesn’t, get an insurance plan that covers you where you are … and fast!
  • Find health care: Most institutes of higher learning will have a clinic on campus for basic health-care needs. Besides that one, you should find an off-campus health-care provider (who accepts your insurance plan) in the event of emergencies.
  • Live healthy: College can present a lot of challenges for staying healthy – stress, sleep loss and dietary changes. Talk with a nurse practitioner near you about how to eat right, manage your time, exercise and sleep – all with your busy schedule.
