While surfing through my Facebook feed one evening, I saw a photo that genuinely triggered an “ah-ha” moment for me. It simply said, “Have an old handbag? Fill it with snacks, hygiene and personal care items. The next time you see a homeless woman give it to her.”
A few days prior I had read that women are the fastest growing homeless population in our society, many veterans. Thinking of that article, and as I saw this photo, I immediately thought this would be one the easiest, simplest ways for all of us to help.
I can’t tell you how many handbags, backpacks and tote bags I have donated or pitched. With me and three girls, you get it! The next time, I’ll do this instead! I can’t imagine being a homeless woman and needing these things with no way to obtain them.
Let’s pitch in! Grab your old bags and fill them with hope. Here are some things that can help (and you don’t have to buy new!):
- face mask
- hand sanitizer
- toothpaste
- soap
- lotion
- feminine hygiene products
- books
- disposable razors
- nail files
- socks
