Holiday 2021 Goals: This Christmas Season Make It a Priority to Focus on Presence, Not Presents by Shannon Benish

After a very informal survey of some fellow moms about holiday stress, it became very clear that gift giving during the holidays was a major cause of tension. Unfortunately, the gifts we give are all too soon forgotten, even if it’s the hottest toy on the market or most requested item on a list. Some gifts may never make it out of their package, only to be packed away and forgotten after the holiday bustle is over.

Let’s make this holiday season one to remember, not for the presents we give, but for the presence we show. Slow down and enjoy the magic of the season and make it more about family, friends and just appreciating the loved ones in our lives. Here are some ideas:

• Make new traditions with your children. Spend time doing or making, not buying. One of my favorite holiday traditions with my children is bundling up, getting hot chocolate and driving around to look at the wonderful lights while listening to Christmas music.

• Make Christmas cookies from scratch and have fun decorating. Don’t fret over the mess. I promise you, take pictures and they will be some of your fondest memories.
  

• For those that don’t like to bake, pre-made dough can be used and the kids will still enjoy the fun of cutting out cookies and putting their special touch on each morsel.

• Assemble a pre-made gingerbread house. It can be great family fun while enjoying a childhood Christmas movie.

Make a pledge to yourself today to slow down and enjoy this holiday season. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself for it to be “perfect.” True perfection is appreciating all of the blessings surrounding us and just enjoying being in the moment.
