Memorial Day weekend is widely known as the "unofficial" kickoff to the summer season. Unofficial because it's still spring until the third week of June. However, with nice weather finally (hopefully) here to stay and a three-day weekend for many families, it's the perfect time to hit the beach, go camping, have a cookout, plant your garden, etc.
I'm not here to tell you that you can't have fun, but I am here to remind you what this weekend is all about. For dedicated service members and the proud American citizens who are grateful for their unwavering commitment to our nation, this is not a holiday weekend, it is a remembrance.
So many brave men and women who serve to protect our freedoms never make it home, and Memorial Day exists to salute their sacrifice. Time heals, but it doesn't erase the pain of loss. People you know will be spending part of their day at the cemetery, missing someone who left in uniform, but didn't return.
It's emotional and it should be. I challenge you to pause, to reflect and to say a sincere "thank you" (and a prayer if that's your thing) for the selfless actions carried out by our military members every single day, so that we can live our own best lives.
I am fortunate to come from a long line of people who served our great nation and I'm willing to bet you are, too. Reach out to the veterans in your life and let them know you're thinking of their fallen comrades. Let them know they are not forgotten, not today, not ever.
