Picture Books: Why I Love Children's Books & How They Help Kids & Adults Learn & Grow!

As an educator I try to keep up with current education and leadership books. It takes me some time to finish them. Yet, I give it that ol’ college try to stay relevant in my profession. Over the past several years I have come to grow more attracted to children’s book for the pictures and simple, but powerful, messages picture books contain.

Educators at all grades and subject areas should not overlook or dismiss picture books. They teach us tolerance, kindness, friendship and let us believe in the power we have inside us. Many focus on finding our voice so we can make this world a better place.

The following picture books have helped me grow as an educator and as a parent. I have given some of these books as presents to family and friends on special occasions. I flipped this learning and have used it to be able to listen and learn from the children in my school. That’s why they are special. Here are my top five picture books. I could not agree more, Abraham Alarcon ! One of my favorite picture books is "Dream:" - parenting: "Dream: A Tale of Wonder, Wisdom & Wishes": A Book for the Young, Old & Everyone In Between . Others that come to mind are "Miss Rumphius" by Barbara Cooney and "Stellaluna" by Janell Cannon. My kid’s favorite book was “Possum Come A-Knockin’” by Nancy Van Laan, though that book is just fun, not really a lesson. I'll share others as I think of them. Look forward to checking out the books you mentioned.

I LOVE "Stellaluna"! It is one of my favorites!

YES! I have been using more and more picture books with my students-especially my older ones. Even big kids enjoy being read aloud to! Some of my favorites include, "The OK Book" by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and "Our tree named Steve" by Alan Zweibel.

Great suggestions, Abraham Alarcon ! I think anything by Dr. Seuss tops my list, but I have to give a plug to "Bucket Filling Fairy" by Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead ! #sogreat

Mine is the ghost of sifty sifty Sam! Love reading it to my kids and we all laugh when we see the picture of the ghost with a belly full of food

Nightmare in my closet.. lovd his book because my kids now read it to me.
