This morning I was reading about how President Trump may be making it easier for hunters to bring their prized treasures home. This made me sad, as I believe we need to protect our world! Elephants are becoming endangered in the wild and need our help to be protected from hunters. I want to protect the earth for future generations. Here are 10 amazing facts about elephants and why we should continue protecting elephants instead of making it easier on hunters and poachers:

1. Elephants love water. They like to swim, dive into the water and find great fun in fighting the waves. My kids loved watching the elephants swim when we saw them at the zoo.
2. Elephant females can have babies until they are about 50 years old! 
3. The main reason why elephants are aggressively killed by poachers is their tusks. We must protect these amazing animals.
4. An elephant's trunk weighs about 400 pounds and has more than 10,000 muscles! Elephants can use it to pick up the smallest objects.
5. African elephants are the largest land mammals on the planet.
6. There are many reports of elephants showing empathy toward other species, such as rescuing trapped dogs and other animals even if it might hurt them.
7. Elephants can get sunburned and they throw sand on their back to protect themselves.
8. An adult elephant needs to drink around 210 liters of water a day. That's a lot of water!
9. Elephants sleep standing up! It amazes me how animals can do that.
10. The main risk to elephants is from humans through poaching and changes to their habitat.
11. The street value of elephant ivory is now greater than gold.
