Parents are the first teachers in their children’s lives. Think of every “first” in a child’s development and that "encouragement" came from a parent. As kids grow, some of those initial achievements can be delayed and some delays continue into the first experiences when children enter school.

Different children attain certain skills at different times, but when parental intuition peaks, they come to school and ask for guidance from the school team. Well-meaning teachers try to reassure parents “not to worry,” but sometimes those delays are not in the child’s best interest. Asking some key questions may be the difference in getting the school to be responsive to parental concerns:

• Is my child’s educational difficulty impacting his or her ability to learn?

• What interventions have been tried to help my child’s performance improve?

• Should my child be evaluated for the consideration of eligibility for special education?

• If my child has a disability, what would that mean?

By seeking answers and being persistent, kids can receive the assistance needed to be successful learners.
