Are Your Kids Bored? Give Them Something to Take Apart by Kim Kusiciel

Kids need boredom in order to think creatively, work together and problem-solve. However, as parents, we can only hear, "I'm so bored" so many times before we want our own timeout! Here's something that will blow their mind and keep them busy for hours – let them take something apart! (Fair Warning: young children should be supervised for this activity, but I promise you'll have fun, too!) Here's what to do:

• Round up any old electronics that are broken, out of date or you are planning to donate.

• Give them protective eye gear (they feel very official with these) and a tool box (no knives or sharp tools, please).

• Put down a drop cloth or a big piece of cardboard for the workspace.

• Then, tell them to take it apart!

Ask them to show you what they figured out or learned. You'll get a kick out of what they think all the circuits and parts are for, but be prepared for lots of questions, too! Kids love to see how things work and who knows, you might inspire the next mechanical or computer engineer!!
