Language Development in Kids: How Creative Storytelling Improves Your Child’s Literacy Development

Storytelling is an important part of literacy development. Sequential stories like, The Story Book Knight by Helen and Thomas Docherty or familiar folk tales like Goldie Locks and the Three Bears or Little Red Riding Hood are a great way to help your child learn to tell stories.

Read to your child and then ask them to retell the story.

Model the retelling by acting out the adventures of the characters in the book.

Encourage your child to tell the story to grandparents, friends, etc.

Help them make up their own stories by creating interesting characters, settings and adventures.

Formal training in literacy starts when children begin school, but literacy acquisition is the foundation of language skills that are learned at home. Rejoice in your child’s creativity!

Giving children time to talk and tell you a story or just about their day is critical. It also teaches kids that you are their to listen.

This is a wonderful tip. Storytelling is KEY to so many developmental milestones. I can still see, in my mind, the many hours sitting with my sons, reading, reading and more reading. Now, they are ferocious readers on their own. I miss them on my lap.

Thanks Beth, I miss lap time too! My fondest memories were bedtime books! I also loved to develop our own stories. "Once upon a time..." They loved creating stories about themselves on adventures.
