A restaurant in Bastrop, Texas, had been tempting my husband and I for a while. So on our trip home from Rocksprings, we decided to stop at Roadhouse instead of our regular Mexican restaurant. My husband was shocked when I looked at the menu for maybe 10 seconds and knew what I wanted (I usually study the menu like it’s a life or death decision). What got me? The words “One of Texas Monthly’s 50 Best Burgers in Texas!” Sold. I ordered the Jalapeno Cream Cheese Burger. Right. Decision. Amazing.
You can duplicate this burger at home. Here is what you'll need to make this copycat burger recipe: sourdough or jalapeno sourdough buns, ground beef (80/20 is best), cream cheese or whipped cream cheese and jalapenos. At Roadhouse, you can order this burger with roasted jalapenos or fresh, sliced jalapenos. The roasted jalapenos are milder than the fresh. I sometimes ask for both.
To roast the jalapenos, I either put them directly onto my gas burner until charred (like how I roast poblano peppers), under a broiler or put them onto the grill. You can make the jalapenos ahead of time and keep them in an airtight container in the fridge.
Serve these juicy, cheesy burgers for lunch or dinner with your favorite side dishes. We like french fries, tater tots or onion rings.

Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes (depends of thickness of burgers)
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 4 sourdough or jalapeno sourdough bun (or your favorite)
- 1 - 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20 is the best for burgers)
- 4 - 8 tablespoons cream cheese or whipped cream cheese
- jalapenos, either roasted or fresh, thinly sliced
Optional Toppings
- lettuce
- tomato
- onion
- ketchup
- mayonnaise
- mustard
Here’s how to make it:
- Shape your ground beef into patties. Season with salt and pepper. Grill to desired doneness. The thicker the burger patty, the longer it takes to cook. You could cook the burgers on an outdoor grill, indoor grill or in a cast iron skillet or grill pan.
- If using brick cream cheese, whip by hand until it's a little loose. If using whipped cream cheese from a tub, it’s ready to roll.
- If desired, throw buns on the grill for a minute or two to slightly toast.
- Assemble the burger by placing meat on bottom bun, adding a heaping spoonful of cream cheese (as much as you want) and topping with the jalapenos. You could also mix the jalapenos directly into the cream cheese.
- Serve with your favorite burger toppings and condiments.
