Divorce & Separation: Advice for My Friend From Someone Who Has Been There Relationships Tip of the Day

This afternoon I was getting ready to go for a run. Like most people, I was scrolling through Facebook, attempting to delay the process. I read a post that shook me: my friend's husband publicly announcing their separation. At first, I thought it was a joke. I was looking under the post for the punchline in the comments section. How can this be? They always seemed happy. What did I miss?

I texted our old boss to see if she knew anything, and she confirmed it was true. I sent my friend a text, telling her I am here for her – if she wants to vent, question my history, whatever – I am here for her. That is something I remember needing, a person to vent to.

She texted me back saying thank you, and how she felt like she was living in my footsteps. While I ran, I thought to myself, "How can I tell her it will be OK? Does she know how long of a road this will be? Does she realize how much of a toll this takes on your self-esteem?"

So instead, I say to her, "I am here for you." Because I am.
