Not Sure How to Be Happy? Here's Why It's OK to Be Happy(ish) Motherhood
I once had a therapist who absolutely changed my life. I met her shortly after leaving my ex-husband, and despite the fact that I had seen other therapists before, Sally was the one who made me see things crystal clear. I can remember one of the first questions she asked me: "Jessica, what makes you, you?"
I sat, wondering how to answer. My first reply? "Gabby's mom." It was not what she wanted. I left that day and did some deep thinking. Who was Jessica, and what made her happy?
Over the course of the year, Sally and I met weekly. She listened to me, watched me cry and helped me realize something very important: You can't lose who you are, just because you are now a mom, a wife, a leader, etc. It is important to do things that make you happy – even if they are temporary. Whether it is having an extra scoop of ice cream or dating someone who may not be long term, find what makes you happy and live in the present.
Hey, Sally? Thanks for showing me the light.
