When Should Parents Address Behavior Issues in Kids or Just Let It Go? 2 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Decide! Parenting

At times it may seem easier not to confront your child about behavior or issues, especially if we are busy, under stress or dislike confrontation. When is it necessary to act, even if you know it will lead in tears or tension?

  • Ask yourself, "How would I like my child to be as an adult?"
  • Are my actions or inaction currently, as a parent, going to help my child to become this adult? For example, it may not be helpful to your child, who you would like to be a responsible adult one day, to clean up their toys for them (even though it saves time and meltdowns).

Persevere and be consistent. The discomfort of confrontation is usually only short-lived. Long term, children appreciate and feel secure having clear and consistent limits.

Bless you for writing this!! It’s exactly what I think my husband I need to hear right now. And I love that it comes from your male, police officer perspective too.
