A Rule for Kids With Smartphones: Don't Text While Moving! Safety

As a pediatrician, one of the most frustrating injuries I see is those due to texting.

  • Kids come into the ER because they were texting and biking and hit a pole.
  • Kids come into my office because they were texting and walking and ran into a tree.
  • Kids come into our trauma bay because they were texting and driving and were in an accident.

They are completely avoidable injuries, yet often have serious or even fatal consequences. A good rule is to keep the phone in the backpack while getting to and from school unless there's an emergency. Explain to your kids that this is really important!
