About the size of a fig, your baby is almost fully formed already. Baby’s head makes up nearly half of his body size, so right now he’s more alien like than human (that will change soon!). At 1 1/2 inches long, Baby is kicking and moving around a lot, though it’ll be a while longer before you can feel it. Tooth buds are forming in her tiny gums, bones are hardening and the diaphragm is forming, which may cause hiccups – for Baby, not you! Hair has started to form on Baby’s head, and tiny nipples are visible. Your baby is starting to straighten up and not resemble an elbow macaroni.

We’ve all heard the saying that when pregnant you’re “eating for two.” Well, that’s not entirely true. Your body is doing a lot these days – increasing your blood supply, dealing with pregnancy hormones that are relaxing muscles so they can expand as Baby grows – and needs the proper fuel. Only 300 more calories per day are needed during pregnancy. Yes, only 300. Here are a few food options that have around 300 calories:
Greek Yogurt Combo

The USDA has made it easier to plan meals during pregnancy by creating ChooseMyPlate.gov. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), this website helps everyone from dieters and children to pregnant women learn how to make healthy food choices at each mealtime. With MyPlate, you can get a personalized nutrition and physical activity plan by using the “SuperTracker” program. This program is based on five food groups and shows you the amounts that you need to eat each day from each group during each trimester of pregnancy. The amounts are calculated according to your height, pre-pregnancy weight, due date and how much you exercise during the week, and are given in standard sizes that most people are familiar with, such as cups and ounces.
Announcing Pregnancy
Many couples wait until they are past the first trimester to announce their pregnancy. Why? Because the risk of miscarriage is has dramatically decreased. If you’re ready to announce your pregnancy, here’s a few fun ways:
- We bought the children’s book “Ten Tiny Toes” for our parents and let them each read it with the thought that we bought it for a friend’s baby shower. On the last page we wrote a note about how we were pregnant!
- We went to P.F. Chang’s and they had baked a special fortune into the fortune cookies that read, “There will soon be an addition to your family.” The restaurant was great; they even gifted me a tiny P.F. Chang’s onesie!
- We announced at Christmas with ornaments inside a gift box that said "Grandma" and "Grandpa." In the bottom of the box was a sonogram picture.
