Healing After Loss: Why Photography Was My Saving Grace Through Grief Mindfulness

After my husband died, I purchased my very first 35mm digital camera. I had always loved photography for as long as I can remember, and I needed a creative outlet – an outlet that could reach deep inside my soul and bring me toward the light.

Each photo I took allowed me to express myself in some fashion. I got creative and that creativity helped me to unleash so much of the intense pain, heartache and sadness when I wasn't able to find any other way. Creativity through my photography calmed my fears and anxiety and brought me to a place of healing.

I absolutely fell in love with the art of photography. I love how it challenges me to stay present in the moment – to frame each subject or landscape to get the right effect. It allows me to capture memories and chronicle my life. When life seems dark, I look back at my photos and see so much hope, so much beauty.

I look at the world from a totally different place and I now see things that I used to miss. I am humbled and filled with an appreciation for all that surrounds me. Photography has become a passion and one of the most important tools in my healing toolbox.

Photography truly was my saving grace through grief.
