In the Wake of National Napping Day: Sleep Tips for Scoring Big on Some Extra Shuteye Sleep

It makes perfect sense that March 11 was National Napping Day because we all "sprang forward" on Sunday, losing an hour of precious sleep. A certain percentage of the population already considers themselves expert nappers (my former college roommate and husband are among them – #anytime, #anywhere), but not all of us can be so lucky.

According to the National Day Calendar, several studies have revealed a short 10- to 20-minute nap is actually the most effective when you start to hit that inevitable midday slowdown. A successful catnap gives you increased alertness, productivity and mood. What's not to love?! So, what can we do to maximize our napping efforts for the remainder of 2018?

  • Keep them short! Any more than 30 minutes will just make you groggy with regret.
  • Aim for mid-afternoon. The Mayo Clinic says between 2 and 3 p.m. seems to be the sweet spot.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings. Keep it quiet, dark, comfortable and free of distractions.

What suggestions do you have? A certain essential oil? A sleep mask? Share below!

I have never been much of a napper, Jessica Acree , but I think it's because I've been doing it all wrong. If I nap, I sleep longer than 30 minutes, for sure, and always wake up feeling awful (groggy, headache). My husband, on the other hand, can literally flip a switch and sleep #anytime, #anywhere, for #anylengthoftime, and feel awesome. I am so jelly! I will try your suggestions, thanks! :-)

I’m the same way Elisa All Schmitz 30Seconds ... I rarely nap and if I do, I usually wake up feeling like I got hit by a truck! Too long for sure, it takes me forever to fall asleep during a nap attempt so it’s hard to judge that critical 30 min time! Zzzzzz

Expert napping must be a husband/male super power... 🕺🏼
