Your mother has dementia. You’re doing the heavy lifting, feeling lost. Being a caregiver for someone in your family is emotionally and physically exhausting. At the same time, complaining leaves us riddled with guilt and feels self-defeating. One thing I learned from the experience of my passage through my mother’s long battle with Alzheimer’s disease is that I didn’t have to go it alone. Although Alzheimer’s (or any physical or emotional condition) seems isolating, there are ways to help each other cope.
- Find a good day-care group for your loved one.
- Reserve some quality time for yourself.
- Form or join a circle of people who are going through similar trials or situations.
It is amazing how sharing with another person who is experiencing analogous circumstances make life instantly better.
