A Doorway To a New Life: Why My Front Door Is More Than Just a Door Mindfulness
A door is just a door until you realize it's the welcome into a whole new life. My front door is being replaced today. It's about 40 years old, but 13 years ago it invited me and my sons into a whole new world, a whole new life. So it has real sentimental value to me.
My door welcomed us daily and closed us in tight. It kept us feeling safe and secure in an unchartered new life. My door was witness to so many ups and downs in life. It was stable in a life that was changing. I knew it would always be there for us.
Today it was time to let her rest. She did her job well. We dressed her up over the years in celebration of life's moments, seasons and holidays. I kept her up the best I could with paint, but the elements in life have weathered her down. Heat has shrunk her slightly in size, leaving gaps between her edges and the frame. It was making me feel a little less secure of her ability to shelter us safe inside and protect us from those elements getting through.
I wanted to memorialize her in some way. So I have taken her door knob and drilled it into one of our beautiful backyard trees. That door knob now holds a small birdhouse in my backyard gardens where I find my peace. I know it's crazy to feel so sentimental over a door, but she has bared witness to my family's growth and will forever be part of our history.
