New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows a significant increase in long COVID cases in January that persisted into a second month. About 17.6 percent of those surveyed in January said they have experienced long COVID, and the number for February was 17.4 percent.
In comparison, statistics from October 2023 and earlier showed long COVID numbers hovering between 14 and 15 percent of the U.S. adult population – going back as far back as June 2022.
The Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regularly query 70,000 people as part of its ongoing Pulse Survey.
In the last three months, the prevalence of long COVID has increased a dramatic 20 percent. This spike requires that we take a critical ounce of prevention. Fortunately, research in The Lancet: Infectious Diseases has shown that a simple, safe, low-cost medication, Metformin, can decrease the risk of long COVID by 63 percent if therapy is initiated in the first three days of infection.
The cost of this safe, life-transforming preventive medication is less than $15 per person. This is indeed a triumph of the biopharmaceutical industry for people everywhere.
