Breastfeeding Problems: The Signs & Symptoms of Lactation Mastitis

Lactation mastitis is an infection of the tissue in the breast that is generally caused by a plugged milk duct or milk excess (engorgement). Symptoms of mastitis include: 

  • unusual breast tenderness
  • breast feels warm to the touch
  • breast is red or tender
  • lump that doesn't go away after a feeding
  • flu-like symptoms
  • fever over 101 degrees F
  • general ill feeling 
  • extremely tired
  • pain or a burning sensation that doesn't go away

Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you suspect you have mastitis so you can be treated.
