Baby Safety Tips for First-Time Moms & Dads: A Handy Guide for New Parents Including 11 Important Reminders to Help Keep Babies Safe

Many first-time moms and dads have doubts about whether they are prepared to take care of a newborn baby. You are not alone. Not many experiences can match taking home a newborn. The enjoyment and happiness parents feel can be intense. It's normal for new parents to have some fear as well, particularly first-time moms and dads. No matter how much you organize ahead of time and plan for the arrival of a little one, there can be unexpected difficulties along the way.

The good news is that parents and newborn-care specialists have collected some of the best tips for caring for babies and shared them here. This information may help new parents, grandparents and caregivers face and tackle the complexities of having a newborn and help keep babies safe and sound. Here are some baby-safety tips to keep in mind:

Baby Safety When At Home

  • Manage young kids whenever they are near the baby or want to play with him or her.
  • If you have pets, do not leave pet food lying around the house. Pet kibble can be a choking hazard to infants and toddlers.
  • To help avoid severe scald burns, do not consume hot drinks when carrying your baby.
  • To make sure that your baby or toddler can't pull on the oven door, use an appliance lock.

Preventing Baby From Falling

  • When you are changing your baby's clothing or diaper, ensure that you put him or her down in a safe place. Learn to keep one hand on your baby at all times. Never leave your baby unsupervised on the changing table.
  • When buying a crib or other furniture for your child, always ensure that it follows federal safety regulations.

Nursery Precautions

  • Many parents like to keep a baby monitor near their baby, especially inside his or her room, and many feel this is the most critical thing to consider buying and installing for kids' safety. With these audio monitors by hubble, you can keep track of your baby, whether you're in or out of the house. This can serve as a "digital nanny," even when Baby is with a babysitter.
  • To help reduce the dangers of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) or suffocation, have bedding, pillows and stuffed toys out of the sleeping area and place your child to sleep on his or her back on level and firm bedding.

Outside With Baby

  • When outside, remember to protect your baby from the sun and wind. A plain cloth thrown over the stroller may be sufficient, but ensure that it’s very thin to avoid confining heat inside your baby's stroller.
  • If you travel with your baby, always use a federally approved car safety seat when traveling in a motor vehicle.
  • Never place your baby in the front passenger seat of your car, especially those with airbags. If you have a car with no back seat, you must disengage the airbag if the baby's seat is inside.

Mom and Dad, you should focus on your baby's movements and the surroundings that they are exploring to help guarantee that they are away from possible dangers. Being a new parent can be very challenging and may raise a lot of questions. Your child's safety and protection should always be a top concern.
