What Do You Want to Be in This World? Advice From My Resilience Coach, Brian R. King! by Kathy Ast

The holidays, moving to a new house, new schools, flu season, aging parents … AHHHH!! Sometimes I don’t know which way is up. To quote one of my favorite 80s movies: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
I don’t want to miss it. I’m a wife, stepmom, work full time, help my octogenarian parents, etc. How do I approach life thoughtfully, patiently, kindly and staying true to my values?
Quotes I’ve heard in the past couple of months include, “Homework is the worst thing ever!” and “Your wife needs to stay in the hospital due to complications from the flu.” Oh, no! What do I do? Fortunately, last year I found very unique support to help me deal with adversity: a resilience coach. My coach, Brian R. King, offered these questions to ask yourself:
- “Who do you want to be in this world?" Ask yourself this with every decision you make.
- "Is this decision or action in line with who I want to be?”
- “If I die tonight, would I be proud of how I showed up today?”
If my actions don’t fall in line with my values that day, then I need to own up and say, “I’m sorry, that’s not who I want to be in this world.”
