Giving Back, Positivity & Kindness: Here Are 5 Ideas to Get You Started

Are you trying to figure out what bad habit you would like to break or what character flaw you’d like to improve this year? Instead of focusing on what I perceive to be negative about myself, I’m choosing to only focus my energy on how I can bring more positivity to others. I believe that one way to make positive changes in your life is to complete acts of kindness. So, my purpose is to actively seek out opportunities to help. I’m committing to carrying out acts of kindness that are random but also intentional. I challenge you to do the same!

You might think you have little to offer, but whether it is leaving quarters at the laundromat, giving an hour of your time packing food boxes at your local food bank or spontaneously paying for a cup of coffee for a stranger, it is the act of giving itself that is important. Here are a few ideas how you can easily help brighten someone’s day:

  • Leave a generous tip next time you buy a cup of coffee.
  • Write a positive sticky note for someone.
  • Add change to an expired parking meter.
  • Practice self-kindness and spend 30 minutes doing something you love.
  • Paint and hide a kindness rock.

What will you do to brighten someone's day?

I couldn't love this any more, Renee Herren . Thank you for the wonderful ideas. I am going to start with the positive sticky notes. I used to do this all the time when my kids were little, and I need to do it now that they are older. Thank you for the inspiration! xoxo Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead

Being kind to myself and others is one of my intentions for the New Year. I wasn't thinking in these terms and love your ideas too. Thanks for the inspiration! Coffee for a stranger and sticky notes work for me.

I hold doors open for everyone, always say hello while looking people in the eye, return peoples carts for them at the store, and the little ones in my family to do the same. These are the things I do on a regular basis. I spent 6 months volunteering in Honduras a few years ago so I am continually raising money and supplies to help support that community. My family is amazing in that we are all always looking for small ways to help people on an everyday basis. The list is endless.
i need to work on self-kindness for sure. Thanks for listing this as an important thing to do to brighten someones day. I always forget about me...
