Osteoporosis: Protect Your Bones With Just 1 Minute of High-Intensity Exercise Daily!

Osteoporosis is more common in women and causes the bone to become brittle, as the new bone production is slower than the wear and tear of the old bone. Especially for women who have experienced menopause, the risk of osteoporosis significantly increases. The current guidelines for exercise is 150 minutes per week for overall health benefits, but it’s not directly related to what exercise is more beneficial in preventing osteoporosis.

A study from the University of Exeter and the University of Leicester found that women who participated in between 60 and 120 seconds of high-intensity, weight-bearing physical activity daily had 4 percent better bone health than women who took part in under a minute of physical activity. Furthermore, women who did more than two minutes of this type of exercise had 6 percent better bone health. High-intensity exercise can be as simple as running in pre-menopausal women and slow jogging in post-menopausal women. The study was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

With previous studies on the benefits of high-intensity exercise, it is even more reason to start incorporating exercise into our daily life. For women, it is important to start adopting a lifestyle that ensures we can enjoy life at an older age.
