We’ve all had our blood pressure taken, but do you really know what the nurse means when she tells you the numbers? Blood pressure is recorded in two numbers, according to the American Heart Association.
- Systolic: The top number – systolic – is the higher number of the two and measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats.
- Diastolic: – The bottom number – diastolic – is the lower of the two numbers and measures the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats.
Blood pressure should normally be less than 120/80 for an adult 20 or older.
