Creamy Chocolate Frozen Yogurt Recipe Is Ice Cream Made Healthy (5 Ingredients) Ice Cream Desserts Snacks Gluten-free Budget Recipes Low Sodium Recipes
Chocolate ice cream lovers, I have great news for you: You can enjoy the taste of chocolate ice cream in a more nutritious way! If you're a chocoholic like me, then you know that when a craving for chocolate ice cream hits, you need to take action. But responding in a healthier way is even better!
I'm a fan of nutritious "ice cream" recipes you can feel good about. I've made chocolate nice cream, which has a base of frozen bananas. I've even made high-protein chocolate ice cream, which has a base of cottage cheese. This time, I decided to make chocolate fro-yo, which has a base of protein-rich Greek yogurt along with bananas. It's ice cream made healthy!
Creamy plain Greek yogurt has many health benefits and takes on the flavors you add to it. So, in a matter of minutes, you can turn plain Greek yogurt into ready-to-freeze "ice cream." This easy, delicious frozen dessert recipe is made with just five ingredients and has a prep time of only about five minutes (with no ice cream maker required).
Here's what you need to make this rich and creamy chocolate frozen yogurt recipe: plain Greek yogurt, ripe bananas (check out the health benefits of bananas), maple syrup, vanilla extract and unsweetened cocoa powder. The pinch of salt is optional. You combine all the ingredients in a blender then freeze before serving.
You can scoop the fro-yo into an ice cream cone or serve it in a bowl with your favorite toppings. I poured mine into champagne flutes before freezing, then served them as an elegant individual holiday dessert with some easy whipped cream on top!
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes plus at least 4 hours to freeze
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes plus at least 4 hours to freeze
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 3 medium ripe bananas, peeled and in chunks
- 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- pinch of salt (optional)
Recipe Notes
- Be sure to use pure maple syrup, not the imitation stuff. If you'd like your frozen yogurt sweeter or not as sweet, you can add more or less, to taste.
- Freeze for at least four hours (or overnight) before serving.
- Topping ideas include chopped nuts, sliced fruit, chocolate chips, shredded coconut, etc.
- Store leftover ice cream in an airtight container in the freezer.
- For ice cream that has been frozen for several hours or overnight, allow the ice cream to thaw at room temperature before scooping and serving.
- I poured mine into champagne flutes before freezing, then removed them from the freezer about 40 minutes before serving.
Here's how to make it:
- Place all ingredients into a blender. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides if needed.
- Taste to see if you'd like more maple syrup or cocoa powder.
- Pour the mixture into a freezer-safe container (or containers, if creating individual portions, as I did). Freeze for at least 4 hours or until it firms up (I froze mine overnight).
- Serve in a cone or in a bowl on its own, or with your favorite toppings.
