When you think of taco rice, you probably think Mexican or Tex-Mex, but this taco rice recipe is from Japan. Really! Takoraisu rice originated in Okinawa, an island south of Japan, where the U.S. military made it popular in the 1960s. Try this interesting, flavorful rice recipe on your family tonight.

Ingredients

Toppings

  • shredded lettuce
  • diced tomato
  • shredded cheese
  • salsa
  • sour cream

Here's how to make it: 

  1. Heat the oil in a skillet. Add the onion and cook until soft, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook 30 seconds. Add the chili powder and cumin. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring, about 1 minute.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5 minutes. 
  3. Add the tomato paste, soy sauce and sake. Cook until absorbed into the meat, about 4 to 5  minutes. 
  4. To serve, put rice into four bowls. Add the ground beef mixture and desired toppings.
