Quick Char Siu Sauce Recipe Will Be the Star of the Show (5 Ingredients, 10 Minutes) Sauces/Condiments Asian Recipes Gluten-free Appetizers

Ready to meet your new favorite Asian sauce? When I made Chef Hiroaki Mitsui's quarantine ramen recipe, my protein of choice was pork. To add flavor to the pork chops, they were marinated a few hours in this homemade char siu sauce recipe. Amazing! The juicy pork chops were the star of the dish. This versatile sauce is now in my lineup for roasted chicken, pork loin, pork chops, pulled pork sandwiches, shrimp, tofu and even as a sauce for fried rice and egg rolls.

The quick char siu sauce is so simple to make, and only has five simple ingredients. Here is your short shopping list: hoisin sauce, honey (check out the health benefits of honey), soy sauce (or gluten-free tamari), sherry cooking wine and Chinese five spice powder. If you're using this Asian sauce as a marinade, it's ready to go after you stir the ingredients together. If you're using it as a sauce, simply simmer it quickly in a saucepot to warm it up.

Servings: 8 (makes about 1 cup)

Ingredients

• 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
• 1/4 cup honey
• 1/4 cup soy sauce (I used low-sodium soy sauce)
• 3 tablespoons sherry cooking wine
• 1 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice powder

Here's how to make it:

1. If using for a marinade, combine all ingredients in a bowl. Pour over your protein and allow to marinate for a few hours before cooking. (For a gluten-free sauce, use tamari instead of soy sauce.)
2. If using as a sauce, combine all ingredients in a small pot and bring to a simmer. Serve warm as a dipping sauce. Store the sauce in an airtight container in the fridge. It reheats easily in the microwave.
