Ingredients

• 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
• 8 ounces (1 package) cream cheese
• 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder (or to taste)
• 2 cups milk (I used 2 percent)
• 8 ounces Parmesan cheese, grated or shredded
• salt and black pepper, to taste (optional, but I added about 1/3 teaspoon of each)

Here's how to make it:

1. In a medium nonstick saucepan over medium heat, add the butter. Cook until butter melts, about 1 minute.
2. Add the cream cheese and garlic powder. Add salt and black pepper, to taste, if desired. Whisk slowly until melted and combined, about 1 minute.
3. Slowly add milk, whisking constantly, until mixture is blended and smooth, about 1 minute.
4. Add the Parmesan cheese and stir until melted and sauce is thick, smooth and velvety, about 1 minute. Remove from heat.
5. Serve immediately.
6. Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop.
