My air fryer has been working overtime for me. Making new air fryer recipes is my latest culinary obsession, and this Japanese barbecue chicken thighs recipe was my latest success. This shortcut recipe only requires two simple ingredients and is on the table in about 15 minutes. This is one high-protein dinner that will be on repeat at my house. (Check out the health benefits of protein.)
This simple chicken dinner is a shortcut recipe because it uses premade Japanese barbecue sauce. Japanese barbecue sauce is soy-based and thinner than regular American barbecue sauces. The umami notes of the Asian BBQ sauce complements chicken perfectly, and helps it create charred edges loaded with flavor.
To make this high-protein recipe you really only need two ingredients. Two! All you need from your fridge is boneless/skinless chicken thighs and a bottle of Japanese barbecue sauce. If you have time to let the chicken marinate before cooking, great. If not, the chicken will still be amazing. The chicken cooks up in the air fryer in about 14 minutes.
The juicy boneless chicken thighs are delicious served with rice, noodles or a grain like quinoa. I added a side dish of creamy air fryer zucchini and sugar snap peas to round out the healthy meal.
Cuisine: Japanese / Asian / American
Prep Time: 1 minute
Cook Time: 12 to 14 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 4 boneless/skinless chicken thighs
- 1/3 cup Japanese barbecue sauce (I used Bachan's Original Japanese Barbecue Sauce)
Here's how to make it:
- Put the chicken thighs and barbecue sauce into a food storage bag or shallow baking dish. (If you don't have Japanese barbecue sauce, you could use your favorite barbecue sauce and add a little water to thin it. For a gluten-free dinner, make sure the barbecue sauce is gluten-free. Bachan's contains no gluten.)
- Squish or stir to coat the chicken. (If you have time, let the chicken marinate in the sauce. If you marinate over 30 minutes, put it into the fridge.)
- Put the chicken into a single layer in the air fryer. (I used an air fryer liner on the bottom of the basket for easier cleanup.)
- Air fry at 400 degrees F for 12 to 14 minutes, or until the chicken is charred around the edges and cooked through. Chicken is cooked through at 165 degrees F internal temperature on a food thermometer.
- Serve. Garnish with chopped green onions, if desired. Store any leftover chicken in an airtight container and reheat in the microwave.
