While quick and easy dinners are always on my radar, I often forget about the simple Asian stir fry. Char siu sauce is one of my favorite Asian sauces, and was the inspiration for this simple high-protein chicken and broccoli stir fry recipe. This sweet and tangy chicken stir fry recipe was on the table in about 20 minutes.
You only need nine simple ingredients for this Asian chicken dinner. Here is your short shopping list: chicken breasts, fresh broccoli (check out the health benefits of broccoli), an onion (check out the health benefits of onion), vegetable oil, hoisin sauce, honey, soy sauce, sherry cooking wine, Chinese five spice powder and cornstarch. The ingredients cook up in one pan or wok. So simple!
The char sui sauce baths the juicy chicken and vegetables, and is delicious spooned over rice. Not only do you get the health benefits of protein in this easy dinner recipe, but it tastes amazing and is wonderful the next day for lunch.
Cuisine: Asian / American
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 2 chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 - 3 cups broccoli florets
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Char Siu Sauce
- 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (I used low-sodium soy sauce)
- 3 tablespoons sherry cooking wine
- 1 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice powder
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
Here's how to make it:
- Stir together all of the char siu sauce ingredients. Set aside.
- Heat the cooking oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the broccoli and onion. Cooking, stirring, until broccoli is crisp-tender.
- Scoot the vegetables to one side of the pan and add the chicken. (I seasoned my chicken with a little black pepper. You could use chicken thighs instead of breasts.)
- Cook the chicken until browned and almost cooked through, about 3 to 4 minutes.
- Stir the char siu sauce and pour it into the pan.
- Bring to a simmer and cook until it thickens up.
- Serve the chicken, sauce and vegetables over rice. Garnish with chopped green onions, if desired. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and reheat in the microwave.
