With the holiday season in full swing, it can be easy to lose sight of healthy eating goals. All the traditional comfort food recipes are so tempting! Because I want to be able to indulge in all the holiday recipes I want, I'm balancing my diet with healthier foods as well. I'm trying to get enough protein, too, because protein plays an important role in fueling our bodies. Studies show an increase in muscle loss as we age, and protein may help slow down age-related muscle loss – along with the other health benefits of protein. Plus, you get the health benefits of fiber.
Smoothies are an easy way to get more healthy protein into my diet, so I like making a variety of smoothie recipes. This yummy high-protein vanilla smoothie recipe with strawberries and bananas packs a protein punch because of the vanilla protein powder, milk and Greek yogurt. The strawberries and bananas provide a bunch (haha) of other nutrients, too (check out the health benefits of strawberries and the health benefits of bananas).
To make this creamy delicious high-protein and high-fiber smoothie recipe, here are the gluten-free ingredients you'll need: milk of choice, plain Greek yogurt (check out the health benefits of Greek yogurt), vanilla protein powder (check the label if you need to be sure it's gluten-free), fresh or frozen strawberries and bananas. The ice is optional. Simply combine the ingredients in a blender then serve up your nutritious smoothie in a pretty glass – with or without a biodegradable straw or festive umbrella.
Serve this refreshing smoothie as an easy breakfast or on-the-go lunch, a protein-rich snack throughout the day or even a more nutritious dessert. I surprised my husband with this delicious beverage as a midday recharge instead of his usual coffee break and it was a winner!
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 0 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 2
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk of choice (2 percent, almond milk, etc.)
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2 scoops vanilla protein powder
- 1 cup strawberries (fresh or frozen)
- 3 small bananas (about 1 1/2 cups), fresh or frozen in chunks
- 1/2 cup ice (optional)
Here's how to make it:
- In a blender, add the milk, yogurt, protein powder, strawberries and bananas. Add the ice, if using. (I used 2 percent milk, but you could use almond milk or your preferred milk. I used Truvani plant-based vanilla protein powder, which is gluten-free, but you can use your preferred protein powder. The half cup of ice is optional, if you want your smoothie extra cold.)
- Blend until smooth, about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Pour into a tall glass and serve with or without a straw or other garnish.
