If you're a fan of super buttery biscuits, then this recipe is for you! What do you call homemade biscuits that bake in a stick of melted butter? Swim biscuits. Why swim biscuits? Because these ultra buttery biscuits literally swim in butter. Not only a stick of butter in the pan, but also plenty of buttermilk in the batter, too. Need we say more? Wow!
These buttery biscuits are so moist and tender. And, because of all that buttermilk, they pack some protein and nutrition, too. Buttermilk actually has many health benefits. According to WebMD, buttermilk was originally made from milk that was left over after making butter. "Churning milk removed the fat by converting it to butter. The churning process left the milk in the churn just a little sour, full of bacteria that are surprisingly good for you. The vitamins, minerals and probiotics in buttermilk provide some excellent health benefits." Check out the health benefits of buttermilk.
But my favorite part about this savory slab biscuit recipe may be how easy it is to make. Believe it or not, these delicious swim biscuits are made with only six ingredients and they're ready in only about 35 minutes. So simple that you can make them any time you have a craving for thick and hearty homemade biscuits (around here, that's almost every day)!
To make these easy, delicious buttermilk biscuits, here are the wholesome ingredients you'll need to gather: butter, flour (all-purpose or gluten-free), baking powder, granulated sugar, salt and buttermilk. (Did you know you can make your own buttermilk? So easy!) All you do is melt the butter in a baking pan while you combine the other ingredients in a mixing bowl to form the dough. Then you spread the batter over the butter in the baking pan and bake up your biscuits until fluffy and golden. So simple!
You can serve these irresistible biscuits for literally any meal of the day – breakfast or brunch, lunch or dinner. But our favorite way to enjoy them is all on their own as a snack any time of day. We heat them in a warm oven to get that "just-baked" taste all over again. So good!
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 20 to 25 minutes (ovens vary)
Total Time: 25 to 30 minutes
Servings: 9
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 2 1/2 cups flour (all-purpose or gluten-free flour)
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 4 teaspoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
Here's how to make it:
- Set the stick of butter into a microwave-safe 8x8-inch baking pan or casserole dish. (Glass or ceramic work well. I used a Le Creuset stoneware baking dish.)
- Microwave the butter for 1 minute then stir. Continue to microwave in 15-second increments until butter is completely melted.
- To a large mixing bowl, add the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. Stir to combine.
- Add the buttermilk and stir to combine.
- Gently spread the dough over the butter in the baking pan.
- Cut the dough into 9 biscuits using a bench scraper (or even just a butter knife).
- Bake in an oven that's been preheated to 450 degrees F until biscuits are tall and golden, about 20 to 25 minutes.
- Allow to cool for a few moments before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container. Warm in the oven for that "just-baked" feeling!
