Because of life's twists and turns, I am home a lot more now. Baking bread has filled some of my time lately, and this is one of the easiest homemade bread recipes ever. The bread tastes amazing and I literally cannot stop baking it! This sandwich bread recipe is perfect for beginning bakers – and you only need four simple ingredients.
You may already have everything you need in your pantry already to bake this easy sandwich bread recipe. If not, here is your short shopping list: active dry yeast, all-purpose flour and salt. You'll also need some warm water. The bread mixes up in minutes, but does need an hour or two to rise in a warm, draft-free place. The dough bakes up in a loaf pan in about 40 minutes.
I've also made a whole-wheat version of this bread recipe. Simply substitute whole-wheat flour for the all-purpose flour.
This flavorful bread is delicious hot with butter and homemade jam or jelly for breakfast, or used to make incredible sandwiches for lunch or dinner. We've been making tomato sandwiches from the tomatoes in my garden. (Check out the health benefits of tomatoes.) The bread also makes a mean ham or turkey sandwich or veggie sandwich. Pile slices of the bread on a plate for a simple side dish with dinner. You can't go wrong! But be ready to want to bake a loaf over and over again (and share the recipe).
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 10 minutes plus 1 to 2 hours to proof
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes plus time to proof
Servings: 10
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast (I used Fleischmann's)
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
Here's how to make it:
- Stir together the warm water and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Add the flour and salt. Mix to form a ball.
- Cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rest for 1 to 2 hours.
- Flour the counter with about 1/3 cup of flour and form the dough into a ball. (The dough is sticky after rising.)
- Put the dough into a loaf pan. (You do not need to grease the pan.) Score the top with a sharp knife.
- Bake in a preheated 400-degree F oven for 20 minutes. Reduce the heat to 375 degrees F and continue baking for another 20 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and let cool before slicing. Store the bread in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
