Because my husband and I are fans of chocolate chip scones, I decided to see if I could make a chocolate chip version of the bread. I'm happy to report that this high-protein chocolate chip scone bread recipe is just as good as the cranberry version (or better, if you're a chocoholic like us). It's like chocolate chip scones in loaf form!
This chocolate chip scone bread has a crispy crust and a tender crumb that is irresistible. It's slightly moist and sweet because of the secret ingredient: mascarpone cheese. Mascarpone is a soft, slightly sweet cheese that's similar to an Italian sweet cream cheese. Found in Italian desserts like tiramisu, mascarpone has a velvety texture that's richer and sweeter than American cream cheese. It added just the right level of sweetness without any added sugar (except for the chocolate chips).
This recipe includes dark chocolate, which is loaded with antioxidants (along with the other health benefits of dark chocolate). This rich loaf incorporates the health benefits of Greek yogurt, which also adds protein. To make this delicious bread recipe, you'll need the following ingredients: eggs, mascarpone cheese, plain Greek yogurt, flour, baking powder, salt and dark chocolate chips. The chopped walnuts are optional. You simply mix up the batter then bake until golden.
This scone-like bread is perfect for breakfast or for brunch with your favorite cup of coffee. You can serve it as a snack with a glass of milk anytime, or as a delightful dessert with a cup of tea. Such simple goodness!

Ingredients
- 3 eggs
- 1 cup mascarpone cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup low-fat plain Greek yogurt
- 1 1/2 cups flour (all-purpose or gluten-free flour)
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Here's how to make it:
- In a large mixing bowl, add the eggs and mascarpone cheese. Whisk to blend.
- Add the Greek yogurt and whisk to blend.
- Add the flour, baking powder and salt. Mix well to combine. (You can use all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour. I used GF 1:1 flour.)
- Fold in the chocolate chips, and the walnuts, if using. (The chopped walnuts are optional, but I like the crunch. I used dark chocolate chips, but you can use semisweet or milk chocolate, if preferred.)
- Evenly spread the batter into an 8x4-inch loaf pan that's been lined with parchment paper.
- Bake at 350 degrees F for about 40 to 50 minutes, or until it passes the toothpick test. (If the loaf is getting too brown on top, you can cover it with aluminum foil.)
- Allow loaf to cool to room temperature before slicing and serving. Store the bread in an airtight container. This bread is extra delicious when toasted in a toaster oven or regular oven.
